O’Mahony gets assurances on Ireland West Airport Knock Featured
Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony, has been assured by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD that Ireland West Airport Knock will not be disadvantaged by any re-structuring taking place in Shannon. Deputy O’Mahony said that IWAK has been a good news story in the West and nothing should be allowed to hold back its growth.
Mayo farmers 'left high and dry' over AEOS cut Featured
Ballina Fianna Fáil Comhairle Cheantar has strongly condemned the recent decision by Minister for Agriculture, Food and The Marine Simon Coveney, to scrap the Agri Environmental Options Scheme (AEOS) for 2012. Fianna Fail members, including members of the farming community, pointed out that hundreds of farmers across North Mayo, who have recently come off REPS 3 and made plans based on the reasonable assumption that they could join AEOS this year, have now been "have now been left high and dry".
Mulherin calls on An Post Board to stand up and be counted
Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin is calling on the Board of An Post to publish its plan for the provision of postal services to rural areas, including the number of post offices it plans to take out of the network in the short to medium term. Deputy Mulherin’s comments come after An Post CEO Donal Connell attended a joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications Energy and Natural Resources and gave no hope that he would re-consider his decision to close Knockmore PO.
Unemployed teachers should get exam supervision roles Featured
Fine Gael TD for Mayo, John O’Mahony, has called for temporary and unemployed teachers to be prioritised in the allocation of roles for the supervision of State examinations. “Over €9 million is spent each year on the supervision of State examinations, I think it would be fair that these positions be allocated to those who need the money most, namely part-time, temporary and unemployed teachers.
Private water meter installation will save money and create jobs in Mayo Featured
Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has said households in Co Mayo and across the country should be given the option of getting approved water meters installed themselves, instead of paying the exorbitant fee of €800 over 20 years. Deputy Calleary as also called on Minister Hogan to clarify if households in Co Mayo that already have water meters fitted will also be subject to the €40 annual charge.
Govt putting Mayo Gaeltacht funding on long-finger Featured
It is inexcusable that with only two years left of the LEADER Programme Gaeltacht areas are in the seventh month of waiting for a mechanism to distribute the funding according to Mayo Sinn Féin Councillor, Rose Conway-Walsh. The Erris councillor said she was not happy with the vagueness of the Minister’s response to a Sinn Fein Dail question and the specific question of whether community groups will get compensated for interest paid and costs involved in this unacceptable delay.
Mayo DEIS schools left out of review as job losses loom Featured
Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has demanded an explanation from the Education Minister Ruairí Quinn as to why disadvantaged schools in Mayo were left out of a review of DEIS cuts this year. These include 2 schools in North Mayo, Scoil Náisúnta Eachleime and Scoil Náisúnta Ros Dumhnach. The Ballina-based TD said it was incredibly unfair that children in deprived communities across rural Ireland are still being targeted by Minister Quinn in this way.
€1.5bn payment to unsecured bondholders 'beggars belief ' Featured
Castlebar Sinn Féin Councillor, Thérèse Ruane, has criticised the Government for allowing AIB to pay €1.5bn of taxpayers’ money to unguaranteed unsecured bondholders. The bank, which is in majority state ownership, made the payment to unnamed bondholders this week. Cllr. Ruane says that the payment of this bond "beggars belief" as it's not even covered by the bank guarantee scheme.

€470,900 funding for Mayo arts organisations and venues Featured
Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has welcomed the news that the Arts Council has allocated a total of €470,900 in grants to arts organisations and venues in Mayo following her representations to Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs, to secure proper funding for the arts in Mayo.
